Preparing Your Little One for Swim Lessons

Living in Florida, we are surrounded by water (literally, we’re a peninsula) so understandably getting your child in swim lessons is a must.

1. Determine an age to start: We first started when our little one was 6 months old in “Mommy and Me” classes. This was very helpful in getting our little one adjusted to just being in the water while also having fun! Different classes have different ages so make sure to inquire about the ages for swim classes in your area.

2. Find a swim instructor: Once he turned 1 year’s old, we decided to take things a little further by enrolling him in Infant Swim Resource (you can read more about it here: ISR Survival Swimming Lessons). I understand that the type of swimming lesson that you choose to enroll your kid in can be controversial but honestly, it is up to your discretion as a parent for what you feel will work best for you and your family. Our kid loves swimming and his instructor! I also encourage you to practice with your kid at home if you have a pool or in pools that your kid would more than likely frequent.

Our little one will be entering year 3 this year of ISR and we could not be happier (you can check out some of his videos on our Instagram page under the “swim” tab under our profile). Nothing replaces careful monitoring of your child around water, but still providing the tools in the event something unfortunately occurs is important too.

3. Consider becoming CPR certified: I also encourage all parents to look into becoming CPR certified if they are not already. You can find out information about doing so here: CPR American Heart Association

As always, I hope you find these tips to be helpful and feel free to connect with me if you have any questions!
